Some may perhaps imagine, that the value of biography depends upon the judgment and taste of the biographer: but on the contrary it may be maintained, that the merits of a biographer are inversely as the extent of his intellectual powers and of his literary talents. Waverley, Guy Mannering, Rob Roy the novels to which Sir Walter Scott originally intended to have confined himself, bear, in their most striking features, a considerable likeness to Castle Rackrent, Ennui, Or- mond, &c. True Religionand the works of Miss Edgeworth will not suffer by a comparison which, to almost any other series, could not fail to be fatal; while she may also justly claim the merit of priority.

The very nature of this cafe, and the danger to which the horfe is cxpofed, fufficiently point'out the propriety and con- fiftency of exerting all poffible alacrity to obtain relief, or counteract the difeafe in its firft ftage : therefore let the fumigation of fcalded bran and hay be repeated every four or five hours, and the following decoction prepared without delay.

Should thefe balls not prove fuccefsful, add to each a dram of camphor, and, where it can be afforded, to a horfe of value, the fame quantity of caftor. Or the following drink may be fubftituted in their ftcad for fome days. True Religion Jeans    Let it be remembered, chat camphor is a very powerful and effectual medicine in thefe kinds of putrid fevers being both active and attenuating, and particuarly calculated to promote the fecretions of urine and perfpiration. Give him two or three of thefe balls, at proper intervals, with a deco&ion of marfh-mallows fweetened with honey.

But if, aotwithflanding the method we have laid down, a greenifh or reddifh gleet is difcharged from his noftrile, with a fiequent fnee ng; if he continues to lofe his flefh, and becomes hide-bound; if he altogether forfakes his meat, and daily grows weaker; if he fwells about the joints, and his eyes look fixed and dead; if the kernels under his jaws fwell, and feel loofe : if his tail is railed, and quivers ; if his breath fmells ftrong, and a purging enfuea with a difcharge of fetid dark-coloured matter; his cafe may then be looked on as defperate, and all future attempts to fave him will be fruitlefs.
